The answer depends on what list you look at. According to the Wikipedia list, there are 39 rivers in North Dakota, but only 34 of them are named "river". The other 5 are named "creek". Geology.com lists 24 rivers in North Dakota with 20 of them named "river" and 4 of them named "creek". The major rivers are the James River, the Missouri River, the Red River (of the North), and the Souris River.
