all engines are different. check with the dealer. be sure to give year make model and engine size. Most caps have a number 1 on it and then you can follow the firing order on the engine block or look in the manual and see what happens. most cars are as followed V8 1234 drivers side 5678 passender side

if its a v-8 it is 18436572 number one on the cap should be pointing at number 1 cylinder is there a picture of the cap
On most cars the firing order is stamped on the intake manifold. the only thing you will sometimes will find on the distributor cap is the number 1 showing the location of the wire that goes to the number one plug.
Number 1 plug position will be listed on the cap. Now if you know the firing order, and you know the direction the distributor is turning, you then will know plug positions as connected to the distributor cap.
A good quality cap has number 1 labeled.
