If the individual is old enough, Imodium AD or Pepto-Bismol. If it is a baby, do not wait, call the pediatrician right away.

An adult (or baby) can become dehydrated completely if vomiting is present. I myself was hospitalized as I lost consciousness within 12 hours. Due to a stomach virus. If you are severely sick, call a doctor and get ready to call emergency if you are feeling light headed and dizzy.

Before trying interventions, you need to know why they are constipated. For example: Alteration in bowel elimination related to inadequate diet as evidenced by hard formed stool that occurs fewer than 2x per week. The interventions you could use for this nursing diagnosis include: Assess factors responsible for constipation and promote corrective measures. A main intervention that can be done is to promote adequate dietary and fluid intake.

If a patient is having constipation encourage the patient to ambulate. Ambulation wakes the bowels and can get things moving. Other options are a enema, suppository, or oral medications; which require a doctors order.
