You can customize it with clothing items from your inventory. You can buy hairstyles and tattoos (or the inks to make the tattoos). If you want to change your eyes or skin color, however, you'll need to delete your avatar. Deleting your avatar won't affect your inventory in any way. You can do this from the Customize Me page.

∙ 14y agoUnder the 'My Gaia' tab, find and click on the 'Account Settings' link. Once you have clicked that, find where it says 'Avatar Gender:' on the left hand side. Read the small print under it and it will give you a link to delete/recreate your Gaia Avatar.

Tektek.org is specifically made to create your "dream" avatar for Gaia online and have the price range listed for it with the items listed that you created it with. You can post the Dream avatar in your gaia profile with the code that tek tek provides for you and gradually (or not) you purchase the items listed in your tektek "dream avatar" post that is on your profile. Most people will then create a text box that contains these characters: _____________ (depending on the size of the name of the item) then use that to cover up the item listed that they have already received/purchased. I hope this makes more sense to you.
