The 400 Ford has only one firing order and it is 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8 which is the same firing order as the 302 HO, and 351. Rotor turns counterclockwise.

I'm putting a distributor in my 79 ford 351 modified 400 351 crank but 400 big block .. i know it is off of time and the timing chain is still good .. but how do i time the 1st cylinder with the distributor . how do i get it firing in order ? The firing order of the 351 Cleveland, 351 Windsor, and 400 are all the same at 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8 Rotor turns counterclockwise. Get the #1 piston, which is the piston on the front of the engine passenger side, at top dead center, (TDC) on the compression stroke. Turn the rotor on the distributor to the #1 spark plug on the distributor cap and insert the distributor into the engine. Time the engine with a timing light.

I believe it is like all chevy's 18436572

The firing order is 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8 Distributor rotates counter clockwise. Cylinder locations are Passenger side front to rear, 1-2-3-4 Drivers side front to rear 5-6-7-8.

Chrysler didn't have a 400 Cu In motor in 1963. The 400 didn't come along until 1972. So with that in mind, I suspect you either have a 383 or quite possibly a 400 that someone swapped in. In any event, the firing order for all Mopar V-8's (with the exception being reverse firing marine engines), is a counter clockwise rotation of 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2.

User Avatar

It has the same firing order as the 302 HO, and 351. 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8 Distributor rotates counterclockwise. Plug locations: Passenger side front to rear 1-2-3-4 Driver's side front to rear 5-6-7-8

i believe that because it's a big block mopar, the firing order should be 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2

User Avatar

whichever front cylinder is farther forward, like closer to the radiator is number one # 1 is on the drivers side front cylinder, firing order is 18436572, distributor has counter clockwise rotation.

User Avatar

The firing order is unique to the engine. For example, 400 v8 1975 Pontiac has a firing order 18436572 as do all Pontiac v8s that year. The difference between the v8s is the rotation of the rotor in the distributor. The 400 is counter clockwise and other v8s that year were clockwise. Go to a public library and look at a Motor's repair manual and there is a page with drawings of all the motors and the firing orders of each. All Pontiac v8's have distributors that go counterclockwise, Pontiac did this so that when you accelerate the distributor gear wouldn't be on the load side of the cam and it wouldn't affect the timing.
