Pure element has zero oxidation number. When forming ions it is equal the charge of ion.

Atomic sulfur has oxidation number of 0. Its simple ion, sulfide carries oxidation status -2. While forming numerous compounds, the oxidation number of sulfur can vary form -2 to +6.

If your considering it on its own as an element then its oxidation state is 0 unless it is reacting with another element example would be Al +S (aluminum sulfide) Al is ^+3 and becasue sulfur is two elements to the noble gas Ar it has an oxidation numberis s^-2

and to write the correct formula for aluminum sulfide ( is monoatomic compound) the oxidation number must equal 0 so it will be Al 2 S 3 .

you assign oxidation number as follows

group 1a is +1 2a is + 2

and for the non metals subtract element from nearest noble gas becasue that is how many electrons it needs to become stable .....

That depends on the compound that it is in but it is often found in the oxidation states 2-, 4+, and 6+. In its elemental for the oxidation state is 0, which is true of all elements.

In sulfides, thiols, and similar compounds such as H2S, K2S, CH3SH and HSCN it s int the 2- oxidation state.

In sulfur dioxide (SO2) and sulfites such as Na2SO3 and SrSO3 it is in the 4+ oxidation state.

In sulfur trioxide (SO3), sulfuric acid (H2SO4), and sulfates such as MgSO4, K2SO4, and NaHSO4 it is in the 6+ oxidation state..

What is the oxidation number of S in H2 S?

+8.H2 has an oxidation of +1 (A total of +2)O5 has an oxidation of -2 (A total of -10).We do not know anything about the oxidation of S, so since we know H2SO5 isn't a complex ion, we can assume the overall oxidation number is 0.Therefore, the oxidation number of S = Oxidation of O5 - Oxidation number of H2.Since 10 - 2 = 8, Oxidation number of S is 8.(no, it did not)Sorry,Sulphur cannot have more than +6 oxidation number as it belongs to VI(A) group. In H2SO5, one peroxide bond is present. i.e., the oxidation number of 2 oxygen atoms is -2. (Compare hydrogen peroxide, H2O2)2 atoms of oxygen will get -1 oxidation number each. The remaining 3 atoms will have +2 oxidation number each. This is a special case. Oxidation number of each hydrogen atom is +1 only. So, finally the oxidation number of Sulphur is +6. [(+2)+(+6)+(-8) = 0]Hope you got it. (yes, it did so)
