When did Tuskegee Airmen fly in World War 2?

This is an excerpt from the official site of the Tuskegee Airman Inc. They served in the European Theater of the war and did an exceptionally good job. They did not lose any planes. They won more medals than any other fighter squadron. Please see their site on the related link below. It is fabulous. And if you get the chance watch the movie about them too. From Tuskegee Airman, Inc."Four hundred and fifty of the pilots who were trained at TAAF served overseas in either the 99th Pursuit Squadron (later the 99th Fighter Squadron) or the 332nd Fighter Group. The 99th Fighter Squadron trained in and flew P-40 Warhawk aircraft in combat in North Africa, Sicily and Italy from April 1943 until July 1944 when they were transferred to the 332nd Fighter Group in the 15th Air Force."

Why were the Tuskegee Airmen important during World War 2?

As far as the overall outcome of WWII itself goes the effect of the Tuskegee Airmen was in my opinion minimal. None of the axis powers, combined or individually, had the resources or the industrial might to carry on a protracted two front war, which is basically what the axis was facing and had they war in the Pacific continued the Russians would most likely have gotten involved on that front in greater depth. What The Tuskegee Airmen, along with many of the other African American officers from all the military branches of WWII did in my opinion was pave the way for the changes in American society that culminated in the civil rights gains of the 60s. The combat record of the Tuskegee Airmen while exemplary and even more so considering the circumstances of the day, and certainly deserving of the utmost respect and commendation , is not as important as The Freeman Field Mutiny and the ensuing changes in U.S. military policy that followed... whether directly or indirectly a result of the "mutiny" itself.

What was the role of African-Americans in the US Army Air Corps in World War 2?

In the 1940's it was still believed that Blacks were incapable of flying aircraft. This myth was dispelled with the help of the U.S. Congress. On June 27, 1939 THE CIVILIAN PILOT TRAINING ACT was passed. This solidary ACT helped to create a reserve of civilian pilots to be called in case of war. Young black pilots were given the opportunity to train with U.S. approved programs located at TUSKEGEE INSTITUTE, HOWARD UNIVERSITY, HAPTOM INSTITUTE, NORTH CAROLINA A and T, DELEWARE STATE, WEST VIRGINIA STATE, LINCOLN UNIVERSITY of Missouri, and HARLEMM AIRPORT in Chicago. The SELECTIVE SERVICE ACT of 1940 has increased the opportunity for a broader participation of Blacks in the militar when it banned discrimination in the selection and training of all American citizens because of race and color. The success of the CIVILIAN PILOT TRAINING ACT helped put the 99th PURSUIT SQUADRON OF TUSKEGEE on the mapl. It was said that "the success of Negro youth in the Army Air Force would be predicated upon the success of the "Tuskegee Experiment". HBOs coudrama THE TUSKEGEE AIRMEN, is a good depiction of this era of Black Americans seeking acceptance as military pilots. Because of the opportunity provided by the Civilian Pilot Training Act, the number of Blacks in the ARMY AIR FORCE jumped from 2,250 in 1941 to over 145,000 by 1944. The 2 major groups to see combat as AAF men were 99th PURSUIT SQUADRON and the 332ND FIGHTER GROUP. Out of the 332nd Group came the 100th, 301st and 302nd Squadrons under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Benjamin O. Davis, SR., who became America's first American General on October 25, 1940. By 1944 the 99th was added to the 332nd and participated in capaigns in Sicily, Rome and Romania. The 99th and 332 earned many distinguished unit citations. When Black Americans were introduced into the white crews of the Air Force, they were unwelcomed and considered not fit pilots. This was soon to change when the Black Americans took on dangerous missions, protected other aircraft and had numerous hits on enemy aircraft. Many out flew the white Americans.

When did the Tuskegee air men die?

The Tuskegee Airman is the nickname for two separate all-black fighter units during WWII. The earliest incarnation was the 99th Pursuit Squadron. Eventually that unit was folded into the larger 332nd Fighter Group. You're talking about literally hundreds of pilots and thousands of ground crew who served in those units. Not more than a handful of them died on any given day. Currently over 100 pilots and 200 ground crewmen are still alive.
