Causes: Well Britain was selling Opium to the Chinese as a major export in exchange for Chinese goods. It was so addicting that over 10 million people were addicted to it in China alone. The Emperor at the time (Qing Dynasty) wasn't too happy so made it illegal to sell or buy Opium in the country. The British ignored the policy, so China started war. Second war was over mistreatment of British merchants.

Effects: China both wars against British (had help of French). Opium was now legal. "Unequal" treaties passed causing more ports to be opened in China allowing unrestricted foreign trade with a fixed tariff (fine/tax). This treaty was made with Britain, and soon other countries in Europe and America got the same rights. At this time Hong Kong became a British Colony along with southern Kowloon. This was an embarrassment for the Chinese so in the 1910's they had a series of rebellions and thus the end of dynastic china.
