The Hobbit is considered the prequel and occurs about 60 years in time before The Lord of the Rings. It is about how the One Ring came back to knowledge in Middle-earth after being hidden for so many years.

The Silmarillion contains portions of the events from the beginning of Middle-earth right up to the destruction of Beleriand and the destruction of Numenor. It is far more like a history book than a story.

The Hobbit. It tells of the life and adventures of Bilbo Baggins, Frodo's uncle. A movie is being made called "The Hobbit" in 2012. Peter Jackson comes back to direct another masterpiece.

Technically the book The Lord of the Rings doesn't have a prequel. A prequel is written after a publication in question but describes the events that happened before the events in said publication.

The Hobbit (book) was written before The Lord of the Rings. The Lord of the Rings is the sequel to The Hobbit, but The Hobbit is not the prequel to The Lord of the Rings.

However, the movie The Hobbit is the prequel to The Lord of the Rings movie.
