Psychological effects of tourism on people?

If its your average joe jetting off to lie on a beach, and live in the hotel bars and eat English food in the resort, then not much.
But if your the sort who once there goes out and mixes in the culture that the country you are visiting, then the effects usually are alot more profound for two reasons (my theory)
Firstly the people who are more likely to do this are a different 'breed' they have a more inquisitive and adventurous outlook. And secondly that when these people experience the real culture outside the resorts, their 'eyes are opened' to a different way of life, and it can promote thinking about the similarities and differences between the new culture they have just experienced, and 'open their minds' more about life and such things.
