Mostly economic. Foreign trade (agricultural exports to Europe) was huge for The South at that time. They broke away because they wanted to negotiate their own trade agreements without interference from The North. Plus, they percieved the abolitionist movement (which was rapidly gaining political traction in The North) as a threat to their economy and their way of life.
The North responded by declaring war because they did not want to lose access to Southern tax revenues and Natural Resources. Probably also because what government ever willingly relinquishes control of anything?
