  • Scindia of Gwalior, the Holkar of Indore, the Nizam of Hyderabad, the Raja of Jodhpur, the Nawab of Bhopal, the rulers of Patiala, Sindh and Kashmir and the Rana of Nepal provided active support to the British.
  • The military equipment of the rebels was inferior.

The Indian Mutiny of 1857 failed for a number of reasons. First of all, only a limited number of Indian states joined the rebellion, while a much larger number of states remained loyal to the British and others did not get themselves involved. Also many sepoy troops and the Sikhs, Gurkha and Pathans - renowned and fierce fighters - remained loyal, and all in all the British had over 100,000 troops with which to counter the rebellion. A call for Jihad against the British largely failed, because of Sunni / Shia disagreements on the matter. And cruelties and mass murders by the rebels of Europeans - a large part of them women and children - made the British fiercely determined not to come to any agreement with the rebel forces and states.

It took a while for the British to get themselves organized, but when they did, they moved their armies against the less well armed and organized rebels and their strongholds. They retook important cities like Delhi and Lucknow and from 1857 on gained ground everywhere. A peace treaty was concluded in 1858, after which only 'mopping up'-operations remained to be done.
