mutations cause genetic variation, and vice-versa. If there is a genetic variation (or lack of one), then this can effect the severity of the mutation.

How does genetic variation and mutations relate to each other?

mutation brings about variation which is the basis of evolution and the two types of variation are heritable and non-heritable

Why are mutations in body cells NOT a source of genetic variation?

They happen after the organism has been born, and often lead to tumours and cancer (caused by carcinogens). Other types of mutations can be caused by mutagens, which mutate the DNA of a cell. It doesn't affect the DNA of every cell in the organism/ reproductive cells, so isn't passed on to offspring

Variation exists within the genes of every population or species as the result of what?

Variation exists within the genes of every population or species as the result of natural selection. The other reason is due to neutrality of mutations.

The mechanism by which evolution occurs is called?

AnswerNatural selection is the mechanism put forward by Darwin as one of the two essential mechanisms for evolution, the other being random mutation (which Darwin described as inheritable variation, not knowing about genes at the time). The modern evolutionary synthesis includes genetic mutations as the mechanism which provides variations upon which natural selection can act.

How does the process of fertilization act to increase genetic diversity within a population?

Random fertilization. All the eggs and sperm produced are variations due to crossing over alone, not even considering other processes. The meet and fertilization occurs randomly insuring a good mix of genetic variation. Thus, genetic diversity.

Other sources of genetic variation in a population are?

Mutations (ubiquitous) and genetic recombination (sexual reproduction only).

Why does variation occurs?

Variation occurs because of mutations in the genetic code.Mutaions occur when one of the nitrogen bases are in the wrong spot like if aa is next to each other in the wrong sequence then the mutations occur

What is causes autism?

Autism is a neurological difference and like any other variation in humankind it comes as a result of genetics. Autism is caused by various genes or genetic mutations, but past that we can't be certain what causes a person to be Autistic.

What is a result of the limited genetic variation in the current cheetah populations compared to earlier cheetah populations with more variation?

d. current populations of cheetahs are able to interbreed with other species, increasing genetic variation.

Is the genetic makeup of daughter cells unique or identical to other cells in the organism during mitosis?

the genetic makeup SHOULD be identical. some mutations can occur so they are not completely identical but these mutations are soo minute that they are often disregarded.

What are 3 causes of variation within a population?

Changes within a gene pool occurring from generation to generation is called microevolution. Allele frequencies in a population may change due to gene flow, genetic drift, natural selection and mutation. These are referred to as the four fundamental forces of evolution. Only mutation can create new genetic variation...the other three forces simply rearrange this variation within and among populations.

The most direct form of DNA analysis is?

The most direct form of DNA analysis is genetic testing. Genetic testing analyzes the DNA for mutations and other abnormalities.

How does variation help or hurt an organism?

Mutations, or variations in genetic code that alter the structure of an organism, can in theory help a creature by allowing adaptation to its changing surrounding. However, genetic code can be rather delicate; many learning disorders are attributed to common, malignant mutations in genetic code.
