The fall of Vicksburg closed off the Mississippi to Confederate traffic, making them unable to reinforce or resupply its forces in the Deep South, giving Federal Forces freedom of movement, and securing its rear against the enemy attack.

The Union Army under General Grant forced back the Confederate Army under General Pemberton. The Confederate forces then took up strong defensive positions around the city of Vicksburg, Mississippi. The Union tried several times to break the southern lines but was repulsed each time. They laid siege to Vicksburg and in about 2 months were able to starve out the southern forces. 29,495 southerners surrendered and handed in 60,000 small arms and 172 cannon. The Union then controlled all of the strong points capable of stopping traffic on the Mississippi River; the river became the means to supply ever larger forces of Union troops in the south.

One less-known consequence came after Grant paroled the Confederates. Most went home to farm and family, but by early 1864 they were again fighting for the south. This led to the end of the parole system; captured soldiers would subsequently be imprisoned until war's end.

The fall of Port Hudson, LA, occurred shortly after the fall of Vicksburg. The Confederate general there realized the full might of the Union army and navy would fall upon him, and thus one added outcome of the battle of Vicksburg was the capture of Port Hudson and its garrison.
