What is one group of people at particularly high risk for developing osteoporosis?

There are five major risk factors (and personally, I have ALL of them!): 1) family history of the disease, 2) cigarette smoking, 3) petite/small frame, and 4) Asian or Caucasian race, and 5) history of eating disorders (malnutrition leads to weaker bones).

If you have any of these risk factors, then you should be exercising regularly, eating properly, and, above all, you should be taking calcium supplements (preferably ones which have Vitamin D added to them, as calcium has a hard time being absorbed without Vitamin D).

It depends on a lot of factors: older females with a family history of osteoporosis, are a particular high risk group. There is an on-line risk assessment questionnaire, which I'll link below.

Being small boned, being sedentary, having passed through menopause, not getting enough calcium, not getting enough Vitamin D and magnesium (needed to have calcium be effective), heredity, but not everybody with this life style gets osteoporosis and not everybody who has osteoporosis was deficient in all these things.

Caucasian and Asian women are most at risk for the disease, but African American and Hispanic women can get it too
