Ask your mechanic, he would know better. But, there is a pin near your gear selector that is engaged when you are in any drive gear, park or neutral, as well as when your key is in the running position, start position etc, that is not functioning properly. The pin is in a state of "feeling" like you are still in any one of those positions and you obviously know that you can't pull your key out of the ignition while your car is running anyway. So this pin has your key locked in the ignition because it thinks your car is still running.
If the key is stuck in the ignition you will need to get it looked at by the dealer. One temporary solution is to pop off the cap next to the shifter console and you should be able to remove the key by sticking a pen in there.
The ignition on the Saturn is very tight and usually causes thinning of the key. The buildup of brass gets into the mechanisms within the ignition cylinder. First lubricate the lock if possible. Then attempt to move to the accessory position and turn off. If this can't be done, then call a locksmith to remove the key- they are way cheaper than a dealer and you would probably save the ignition.
The common procedure for a locksmith is to get the key to at least the accessory position. If the lock will not push in and turn through manipulation of the key, then the key will usually be drilled out. Again, a locksmith is the best for this because of their knowledge and ability not to destroy the lock. with drilling the actual key (which would be broken off even with the ignition) the vibration and rocking will usually cause the release mechanism to eject and the ignition to turn back off. The key can then be removed and a new one cut. When the key is out, lube the heck out of the cylinder to wash out all the accumulated brass.

To remove a key that is stuck in the ignition on a Peugeot 406 HDI, make sure that the car is in park. Then try to remove the key. If this does not work, spray the ignition mechanism with WD-40 after pulling out the key as far as possible. Then work the key in and out until it comes out.

The tumblers in the key cylinder have most likely become stuck in the wrong position and you will have to replace the ignition key cylinder.
Replace your ignition lock assembly.
With the key stuck in the accessory position the steering wheel is locked and the gearshift is locked in the park position. Perhaps you should consider having a locksmith change the key cylinder where it is, or else have it towed to the garage.

Well, it sounds like the chip that is in your key may have broke or got stuck on a part of the ignition. I had that problem. This happened not long after I had had to have the ignition replaced?!?
Try jiggling the steering wheel a little, press your brake pedal, and make sure your car is in PARK.
There should be a lock on the ignition a push button that you push and turn to remove the key
It's not the Battery, Saturn has a problem with there Ignition cylinders. It will need to be replaced. the Dealer charges about $400.00 but you can do it yourself for about $70.00 in parts. The easiest way for you to do it , is get a Manuel or go to youtube.com and watch a video. It took me about thirty minutes.
