The taxon Dinosauria was formally named in 1842 by English palaeontologist Richard Owen, who used it to refer to the "distinct tribe or sub-order of Saurian Reptiles" that were then being recognized in England and around the world. The term is derived from the Greek words δεινός (deinos meaning "terrible", "fearsome", or "formidable") and σαύρα (saura meaning "lizard" or "reptile").

Tyrannosaurus rex

"Tyrannosaurus" is the genus and "rex" is the species. Current scientific thought places only one species within the Tyrannosaurus genus. The proper way to write its scientific name is to capitalize Tyrannosaurus (or T.) with a lower case rex, as in Tyrannosaurus rex or T. rex. The name in Latin means "tyrant lizard king".

Brontosaurus is no longer a valid type of dinosaur, since it was named from a combination of pieces of different dinosaurs (specifically the head of a Camarasaurus on the body of an Apatosaurus). If you had to pick, Apatosaurus would probably be the best genus name to use.

Tyrannosaurus rex is its own scientific name. Fortunately, nobody really gave it a common name like they gave to the lion or elephant, so everyone just calls it T. rex.

The brontosaurus and apatosaurus are the same thing. Apatosaurus is actually the genus name. So it actually is the scientific name.
