The effects of the Vietnam War were numerous on varied fronts, but several can and should be enumerated such as:
* Many of the first soldiers dispatched into Vietnam, contracted the poisonous pesticide, Agent Orange, which seeps in to the bones and bloodstream and can be past on to the children of the veterans..i.e...me!!! , and by the way...General Westmoreland was my Fathers General; great man.
The short term effect was the testing and evaluating of US Cold War weapons and equipment; most of which of course no longer exist, and/or have long since been replaced. Or, as in the case of the B-52 Stratofortress Bomber, which has been updated and modernized. Cold War jet fighter aircraft used during the Vietnam War, such as the: F-8 Crusader, F-4 Phantom, F-100 Supersabre, F-101 Voodoo, F-102 Delta Dagger, F-104 Starfighter, F-105 Thunderchief, F-111 Aaardvark, A-1 Skyraider, A-4 Skyhawk, A-6 Intruder, A-7 Corsair II, Spy planes U-2 & SR-71 Blackbird, Observation airplanes 0-1 Bird Dog, 0-2 Skymaster, 0V-10 Bronco, Gunship C-130 Spectre, Attack Helicopter Cobra, and Utility Helicopter UH-1 "Huey", were all USED EXTENSIVELY and the performance tested and studied. With the following results: The F-4 Phantom REPLACED all of above listed jet fighter planes, until it itself was phased out by the F-14 Tomcat for the US Navy and the F-15 Eagle for the US Air Force. The B-52 still remains the "King" of the bombers, but is slowly giving way to the B-1 & B-2 bombers. The US Army's Vietnam War attack helicopter "Cobra" was REPLACED by the "Apache" attack helicopter. The US Army's UH-1 "Huey" was replaced by the "Blackhawk" (although UH-1's are still around). The U-2 & SR-71 were retired and replaced by satellites. The U-2 has temporarily been revived for "some" missions. The Observation airplanes were replaced by helicopters.
1. The split of Vietnam into North Vietnam and South Vietnam led to the formation of the Vietcong. 2. The Civil war between the Viet Cong and the South Vietnamese led to the Americans sending in ground troops. 3. The Americans invaded Vietnam so that communism wouldn't spread. 4. The primary cause of the Vietnam War was the invasion of the French shortly after World War II. By occupying the country, the French created an imbalance in the cultural lifestyle of the Vietnamese. This made the country unstable. 5. The Vietnamese had suffered under French colonial rule for nearly six decades and were not happy with the way that they were being treated. The most immediate effect of the Vietnam War was the staggering death toll. The war killed an estimated 2 million Vietnamese civilians, 1.1 million North Vietnamese troops, 200,000 South Vietnamese troops, and 58,000 U.S. troops. Those wounded in combat numbered tens of thousands more. The massive U.S. bombing of both North and South Vietnam left the country in ruins, and the U.S. Army's use of herbicides such as Agent Orange not only devastated Vietnam's natural environment but also caused widespread health problems that have persisted for decades. from sparknotes I didn't say it, sorry.
A 2 to 6 yr interruption in people's lives. Two yrs for active duty, or six yrs reserve military duty. The interruption affected females who had boyfriends, brothers, sons, fathers, husbands, etc. The interruption affected males, because they were called up for duty.
Up until Operation Urgent Fury (President Reagan's invasion of Grenada in 1983), the US was VERY reluctant to become militarily involved anywhere.

Vietnam was a separate war fought many years after WWII had ended. It had no importance in WWII. The aftermath of WWII did have significant effects on the vietnam war however, but that is another topic.
