Children between the ages of 3 and 5 are at a critical stage in brain development for the development of language and other cognitive skills. The extent to which heavy television viewing can influence the development of brain neural networks, and displaces time the child would spend in other activities and verbal interactions, influences early cognitive development.

# The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that total television time be limited to no more than 1 to 2 hours per day.

# They also recommend that programs watched should be geared to the age of the child, non-violent in nature and should reinforce language and social skills.

# Parents should establish healthy television viewing habits in the pre-school years. Young children's television viewing should be limited to careful, thought-out, educationally-oriented programs.

# To foster reading skills, give your young child exposure to books. Read to them often. Support your early reader with reading practice and limit television viewing.

# Homework should be completed away from background television.

If kids start watching it, they become addicted. Then, they watch commercials, so every five minutes, you'd hear, "Mom, come here! This is so cool! Can we get one?" Then they'd want to get video game systems for it. That means they'd be glued to the TV almost all the time. Without TV you can do more things with your kids, like playing outside, playing Board Games, chores (gotta love this one), and just talking to each other. Plus, if they get video games and watch TV you'd have to make sure all their games were e rated unless you want them to get bad ideas. Same thing with TV The only shows that are not offensive now are on noggin. I cannot think of one good reason to let kids watch TV Whoever is asking this might be different, so don't get offended, but most parents who let their kids watch TV just do it because they're lazy and don't want to look after and have fun with their kids.

No, there are a lot of educational shows for children to watch on TV. However, you might want to consider limiting their time in front of the TV and encourage them to do something more active.

10-12 year old may have a cheap 24 inch TV in there room. But my children bu there own TV if they want one. It shows them responsibility with money. My 10 year old is planning on buying a TV. I am very proud as she already saved up $270. But 4-8 should absolutely NOT have a TV or even buy one there own. They do not understand economics and they don't understand tax, shipping. So far only two of my kids had the responsibility to buy one. But I do not blame the other one, she is saving up for a car.
