It depends for what you need it. For example if you are going to edit some layer's filters then you should, just to make sure you can go back later. The short cut for duplicating a layer is,
mac: Command + j
windows: control + j
using the quick section tool or the lasso tool (other are available but require more knowledge in tools selection in Photoshop) select the image or part image until you have the "running ants" around the selected are and if using a pc CTRL and J or Command J in mac will copy the selected area to a new layer
The easiest way is to select the layer you want to be duplicated, and hit CTRL+J for PCs or Command+J for Macs
Easiest way is to select layer (click on it on LAYERS palette) then press Ctrl + J keyboard shortcut or go to Layer > Duplicate Layer.
I'm guessing you mean that you want to duplicate an existing layer? To do that, simply select the layer you want to duplicate in the layers window, and then click the little 'duplicate' button.
Well, I'm not sure what you mean about erasing the white thing, but you can duplicate it on another layer by right clicking on the canvas layer on the layer pallette and click "duplicate"
Open the picture in Photoshop In your Layer palette, the picture will show up as "background". By Default, this background layer is locked. You need to unlock this layer. Just double click on this background layer, when a "new layer" window pop up just press "ok" ( or you can rename this layer if you want to ) If for whatever reason you can not unlock this layer, just grab this layer and drop it in the duplicate layer icon on the bottom of the layer palette ( the one next to the trash can ) OR you can right click on this background layer and select " duplicate layer" The point is that you need a layer that's not locked. If you choose this duplicate layer method, remember to delete this background layer or turn off the eye on this background layer in order to see the transparency working. When you have a layer that's not locked, in the layer palette, there's an "opacity" option that's set to 100%, change this percentage and you've got a picture that will be transparent. Hope this helps.
To create a glow effect behind an object that is a separate layer than your background, first duplicate that layer. Then, selecting the bottom layer, go to colors > colorize and pull the lightness to 100 so that the duplicate is white. Click 'OK' and then go to filters > blur > blur. The image should have a white glow behind it now.
[Ctrl + J] - without dialog [Ctrl + Alt + J] - with dialog You can duplicate an entire layer, or, if you have a selection, the selection will be duplicated to it's own layer. This is great when trying different techniques or effects without having to worry about errors.
There are several ways, you can for example duplicate the layer, blur it and change its color. Or you can just add colored shadow.
In paint tool sai on top there says Files,Edit,Canvas,Layer....etc. Select the layer you want. Then click on Layers and then click Copy....Hope this helps you out...=)

you can do this under Image> Adjustments> Brightness/Contrast and pull the slider on the Brightness down. You may want to increase the contrast if needed. Duplicate the Background layer, then set the Blending Mode of that layer to Multiply. From there you can add a Layer Mask and paint away any areas that got too dark.
