it all depends on the situation you are put in. if your are being timed on the number of words you can type in a minute then yes speed is the most important but usually when you are typing it is for a school assignment or essay and your teacher doesn't base your grade on the speed of your typing, rather the accuracy and quality of the paper given.
If you're holding your hands correctly and following the techniques taught to you, you will be able to type very fast indeed. Having your hands in the wrong positions means you can't hit the right keys and have to waste time hunting for them!
Accuracy, of course. Speed comes from practice but first one should learn the keyboard and how to find the keys by "muscle memory" rather than the typical "head down, hunt 'n' peck" method. When I first took typing in junior high, I was the typical beginner with hunting and pecking and could type about 20 words a minute that way (pretty good for that method). However, after a single semester of learning how to type, I was already typing properly at 30 wpm. Now, over 30 years later, I can type anywhere from 80 to 120 words a minute, depending on the keyboard.
For now, while you are learning the ropes of the keyboard, focus on remembering the home row and where all other keys are in relation to your default finger positions. The rest will develop naturally.
If you are learning touch-typing, you should focus on accuracy.
