Absolutely! I have Asperger's (I'm a 15 year old girl), and I was actually quite relieved when I was diagnosed. I've always felt different to other people, and I know that I see the world differently, so it has made me feel less "weird" and more just different. Plus it really helps that my teachers and good friends know, because then they can look out for me, and help me to do certain things. And the teachers know that some things (like lots of people, or loud noises) upset me, and that it's not my fault when I flap my hands, or start rocking or something. So definitely tell your child - it will help them to understand themself. Because (and I can only speak for myself), I feel a lot safer if I understand everything always, and it helps that I can now understand myself better.

How do you tell a parent that you think their child has Asperger's syndrome?

My mother-in-law showed my wife an article on Aspergers Syndrome. That's how we figured out that our daughter had it. Tell the parent to read the explanation of Aspergers on Wikipedia, and see if they can detect any similarities.

What if your you suspect Asperger's Syndrome in your husband but he refuses to read about it?

You could talk to a psychologist and tell them the signs of Aspergers that your husband is showing. That way if your husband does have Aspergers he can get medicine for his symptoms, but not all people with Aspergers need medicine

How do you tell a child about Asperger's Syndrome?

What and how you tell a child about Asperger's Syndrome will depend on the child's age and how much interaction he or she will have with a person who has Asperger's Syndrome. A child with a sibling or parent who has Asperger's Syndrome could see more characteristics of Asperger's Syndrome than one whose friend has it, and a child whose friend has it is likely to see more characteristics than one whose classmate has it. If it is a friend, discuss it with the parents of the friend to learn what characteristics the friend exhibits and what your child could do to help his or her friend. If it is a classmate, ask the school personnel what behaviors occur at school. Some characteristics to cover are: * misinterpreting meanings such as when taking words literally * sensory issues * adherence to routines such as wearing the same clothes or sitting in the same spot Some of the more comprehensive websites on autism and Asperger's Syndrome have information on describing Asperger's Syndrome to children. Also, the book "Can I Tell You about Asperger Syndrome? A Guide for Friends and Family?" by Jude Welton is written for children. It might be available from your local library. If you are telling a child that he or she has Asperger's Syndrome, see the related question below "How do you tell your child that she has Asperger's Syndrome?"

How do you recognise Aspergers in adults?

Looking at the diagnostic criteria of Asperger's Syndrome and lists of characteristics commonly found in people with Asperger's Syndrome is a start on recognizing Asperger's Syndrome in adults. However, adults can learn accommodations, so it can be harder to recognize. You can get additional information from family who might be aware of childhood characteristics or of adult idiosyncracies that would not be noticed under most circumstances. One more source of information is the person himself or herself, who might share thoughts and feelings that he or she is able to camouflage in most situations.

Can you tell when you're pregnant if you're going to have a down syndrome child?

You don't automatically "just know", if that's what you mean. There are tests that can be done, however.

Yes, I'd say the father has the right to know who his child is (should it be true of course).
