Since gum is sold as candy and candy is food then shouldn't gum be considered food aswell?

It depends what the gum paste is made of.

Technically, it's edible, but it tastes disgusting and dries rock hard. You're better off saving a gum paste flower or figure in your china cabinet as a memory of the special occasion.

Gum is technically classified as a "snack food", but "food" is defined as "any nutritious substance that people or animals eat or drink, or that plants absorb, in order to maintain life and growth", a definition which gum doesn't satisfy.

You will however get little nutrition out of it once it is chewed and its sugar contents is used up.

In most cases, it will just partly dissolve in the stomack and be expelled like all other non-digestable matters.
