Smokey Bear was found in spring of 1950 near Taos, New Mexico during the devastating Capitan Gap wildfire in the Lincoln National Forest. He was up in a tree, suffering from badly burned paws and hind legs.
Originally named Hotfoot Teddy, he was soon transported to the National Zoo in Washington, DC to perform public service for the rest of his sweetie bear life (26 years). He became the zoo's most popular attraction, eventually obtaining his own ZIP Code from the US Postal Service.

∙ 13y agoHe was found in a tree with burned paws and hind legs. The firefighters searched for his mother, but she could not be found. He was about as big as cocker spaniel dog at the time (about 5 lbs.). Adopted, rehabilitated, and sent to Washington, D.C. to live in the National Zoo, he became the zoo's most popular attraction. At one time, he was was receiving 13,000 letters a week (!)so the US Postal Service gave him his own ZIP Code.
