MUCH too broad a question to even begin to thin about being addressed on this venue. Libraries full of books have been written on this subject.

Some general questions lawyers might ask include:

  • What is your name? Address?
  • Where can you be contacted?
  • Why are you seeking my services; why are you here today? What can I do for you?
  • What details can you give about your problem? Who - What - When - Where - Why - How?
  • What help do you expect from me regarding this problem? What outcome are you seeking?
  • Do you have any records concerning this problem?
  • Who might be witnesses?
  • Does / Did anyone else know about this situation?
  • Who else should or could I contact on your behalf about this situation? (Most attorneys will already know "who" they will need to contact to resolve the problem, but an attorney may ask you for more names.)
  • When can you come back in (if the attorney needs to see you again)?

Mostly, attorneys will listen. Then, they tell you if they can help, the cost of their hourly fee and retainer, etc. The client should ask questions.

No. A defendant cannot ask for pre-trial access to the prosecution's questions. The unrehearsed nature of the defendant's answers to the prosecutor's questions reveal more of the truth than a planned performance would.
