Pounding heart, sweating palms, and an overwhelming feeling of impending doom are common features. While the attack may last only seconds or minutes, the experience can be profoundly disturbing.

Common Panic Attack Symptoms
  • Rapid heart beat, pounding heart or palpitations
  • Sweating
  • Shaking visibly or inside
  • Choking sensations or lump in throat
  • Smothering or shortness of breath sensations
  • Chest pain or discomfort
  • Nausea, bloating, indigestion or abdominal discomfort
  • Dizziness or unsteadiness
  • Feeling light-headed
  • Derealization (feeling unreal or dreamy)
  • Depersonalization (feeling outside yourself or like you don't exist)
  • Fear of losing control or going crazy
  • Paresthesias (numbness or tingling sensations) in face, extremities or body
  • Chills or hot flushes
  • Skin losing color
  • Blushing or skin blotches
  • Urgently needing to urinate or defecate
  • Inappropriate/Disturbed thoughts
  • Muscle pain, especially in neck or shoulders

The symptoms are incredibly varied and can vary between individuals and even between attacks. The most common symptom which all sufferers can relate to is the overwhelming feeling of fear or extreme malaise. You feel as if you simply have to get away right now from...whatever. You may not even know what you want to get away from. It can come out of the blue or develop gradually. It may be linked to a specific phobia. The usual body responses to fear kick in such as an increase in heart rate breathing and an adrenalin surge - which is what makes you want to GO! You can feel closed in and trapped and all of the symptoms combined can make you wonder if you are really ill or dying.

The problem with many of the symptoms is that they could be very serious in themselves so until you know your own symptoms and health status it is best to get them checked out . If it is a genuine panic attack you can get medication to assist that as well. In addition to the symptoms mentioned above here are some others that those who suffer panic attacks may feel.

Dizziness

Shaking

Exhaustion

Sweating

Feverish

Sleep disturbance

Breathing difficulties

Inability to concentrate

Digestive upsets

Feeling 'disconnected' and unreal.

Thinking as if your going to die

Racing thoughts, racing heart, cold flashes, hot flashes, MOST COMMON: CHEST PAIN, heart palpitations, sweating, feeling of impending doom and fear. Fear that you are dying, feeling like you can't breathe, dissoriented dizziness, feeling like you are going to pass out, nausea and tremors. The list goes on but if you have at least 3 of these symptoms persisting at once then more than likely you are having a panic attack. A lot of people have themselves taken to the hospital thinking they are having a heart attack because of the chest pain. I have had panic attacks in the past and the chest pain is pretty bad but from what I've read the pain associated with a heart attack is much worse...reported by many as a crushing pressure on their chest and pain that also occurs in the left arm and even in the jaw. Of course you should be seen by your doctor before you can diagnose your symptoms as a panic attack or not. I am not a doctor and I am only speaking from my own personal experience and research.

Some symptoms of an anxiety attack include: sudden overwhelming panic, chest pain or heart beating irregularly, feeling of losing control, hyperventilation, trouble breathing, shaking or trembling, nausea, and hot flashes or chills. These symptoms normally come on suddenly and without warning, and can be caused by something obvious, or without any real trigger at all.

How did you overcome panic attacks?

One of the most effective ways to stop having panic attacks is to look at each symptom of the panic attack as it's own thing, rather than a symptom of a panic attack. For example, someone might always feel really dizzy when he is starting to have a panic attack. Then the next time he feels dizzy and can't explain why, he begins to get nervous, and the nervousness causes more symptoms, and the cycle continues until he's actually having a panic attack. A way for him to get better would be to start spinning, and replicate the dizziness, so he can realize that dizziness doesn't necessarily mean panic attack. If you sweat excessively during panic attacks, then go to a sauna. If you feel out of breath during panic attacks, hyperventilate. Isolating the symptoms can help stop them from escalating.
