What are the symptom of being low on potassium?
As with most electrolyte imbalances the symptoms of hypokalemia, or low potassium, are tied directly to its function in the body. A normal potassium level is anywhere from 3.5-5.3 mg/dL in human blood. Anything less than this can be called hypokalemia. Symptoms are hypertension, cardiac dysrhythmia, muscle weakness, and constipation. If allowed to continue it may progress symptoms will progress to decreased reflex response, paralysis, tetany, and cardiac arrest. It is also important to note that symptoms are not typical until the potassium level is some where around 2.6.
What are the symptoms of a potassium overdose?
Potassium overdose is known medically as hyperkalemia. Symptoms include malaise, heart palpitations, and muscle weakness. Unfortunately, this condition is difficult to diagnose because the symptoms are similar to a variety of conditions. The best indicator comes from the patient's circumstances. For example, hyperkalemia is often caused by trauma, renal (kidney) problems, and certain medications (e.g., potassium-sparing diuretics).

What happends when you have too much potassium?
Usually having "too much potassium" in your bloodstream (hyperkalemia) will give you no symptoms, however some people may experience nausea, irregular heartbeat, or feeling tired/weak. However many other conditions could easily cause those symptoms. Severe hyperkalemia can lead to cardiac arrest. However from a dietary perspective, it is actually fairly difficult to (regularly) ingest too much potassium via what you eat, and if you do ingest too much every-so-often, your kidneys are fairly efficient at getting rid of it. It is primarily if you kidneys do not work efficiently that hyperkalemia becomes a problem. Some prescribed drugs may also raise blood potassium levels.
