Many disasters involve the crippling or destruction of normal communications methods:

  1. Telephone (especially cellphone) networks may be overloaded.
  2. Electrical power may be unavailable (especially at a disaster site).

Radios and radio systems that are portable and battery (or generator) powered can avoid the above problems.

In disater Effected communities the Radio stations are the primary public information service, bringing information on for example in a huricane situation on the storms progress, when to seek shelter, and when it is safe to move around outside once again. They will also provide information on the severity of the disaster and any recommended actions the authorites have set for the population.

Basically Radio is the chief source of communicating with the community in a disater situation
