It cost a lot of money to keep soldiers on the front lines. Each country involved had to ration things at home to keep the soldiers well outfitted and people who usually worked in the private sector found themselves working for the war effort instead. Governments had to spend huge amounts of money buying armaments and special taxes were levied to fund the war effort.

This is the first time I've read or heard the suggestion that Germany went to war for economic reasons. The usual reasons given are political, even if there were some economic tensions in the background.

There were many reasons behind World War 1. The main spark of it was the assasination of Franz Ferdinand in Serigavo in Bosnio. Then the Germans invaded Belgium but Britain had a treaty with Belgium, so Germany became at war with Britain, France and Russia joined Britain to make the Triple Entente, Germany joined an alliance with Austria-Hungary and Italy.

Franz Ferdinand's death was a big part in starting WW1, but Imperialism also was something that was building tension over years, and that tension was apparently let out though war.
