Best Answer

a person with IQ above 110 is considered to be genius

The answer to this question depends entirely on

  • What you use to define a genius.
  • What scale you use.

If you consider that only mathematics knowlege or logical thinking makes you a genius, then why is Michealangelo (The artist) described as a genius?

Is somebody born a thousand years ago more or less intelligent than you just because you have a broader field of knowlege?

How do you fit a savant into your IQ test? They may be able to memorise and play a piano concerto instantly but cant add 2 +2 or even ties their own shoelaces. The truth is that most people have difficulty describing the question let alone answering it with a test. therefore most IQ tests are meaningless unless designed to specifically test a particular ability.

Genius is something that someone does, not how she/he scores on an IQ measure. If you think you might be able to consider yourself a genius because of a number, you are seriously missing something important.

It is instantly obvious to any genuine genius that the person who wrote this ‘answer’ has never experienced being a genius.

One standard places geniuses at 140 to 145 and above. Another sets this at 160.

Answer

75 years ago, it was common to equate "genius" with a very high IQ, typically one that would be seen in fewer than 1 in 100 people, or even 1 in 1,000 or 10,000 people. Using scores from the highly respected WAIS-III IQ test, an IQ of 135 would be seen in 1 of every 100 people; an IQ of 145 in 1 of 1000 people; while an IQ of 155 (the WAIS test ceiling) would be seen in only 1 in every 10,000 people. If we took an IQ of 145 to be our "genius" cutoff, that means that in every big-city high school of 3,000 students, there would be an average of 3 geniuses. Could this be right?

If being a genius meant only that one had an IQ of 145 or more, perhaps so. However, most adults have probably met the smartest people in their high schools -- often people with IQs of 145 or more -- and though those people might have seemed smart, advanced, precocious, or gifted, we might have a wee bit of hesitation calling them geniuses unless there were some notable creative accomplishments as well -- something that made us exclaim "WOW!".

Today, most cognition and neurology scholars would not consider a person a genius merely because he had a high IQ. Geniusappears to have at least as much to do with creativity, referred to by professionals as "divergent thinking", as it does with the suite of reasoning, computational, and symbolic manipulation abilities called "intelligence", or "convergent thinking". Arguably, though, a person who has exceptional convergent and divergent thinking abilities is likely to be a genius, unless physically or emotionally unable to produce. From this it could be said that genius is as genius does.

Two standard deviations above the statistical norm is what qualifies a person to join some high IQ societies. It doesn't prove that someone is a genius, but it does indicate a very superior level of intelligence. On the Cattell Culture Fair IQ Scale this would be 148, on the Stanford-Binet it is 132, and on the Wechsler it is 130. The reason the numerical values are not consistent with each other is that they are normalized differently. A score of 130 on the Wechsler is actually quite a bit higher than a score of 141 on the Cattell, despite the fact that these are both credible scales.

.

The term "Genius" is subjective. IQ tests are not magical genius detection devices. They are simply a tool based on normalized statistics with a limited use for assessing academic and vocational potential. An obvious limitation of IQ scales is that they are not regarded as an effective means to gauge artistic or musical ability (which do require specific intellectual gifts). There are also many people who score highly on IQ tests simply because they are familiar with IQ tests and not due to exceptional intelligence.

.

Anything above two standard deviations above the norm requires a serious analysis by a psychologist specializing in psychometric measurement. An IQ test will not be an accurate measure of such an intelligence level. People with IQ scores beyond the ceiling of conventional IQ tests were ranked with those scores through such means. They did not take online IQ tests on Facebook.

I guess it would be 141. (Actually, a score of 141 on the Wechsler would be exceedingly rare; roughly 1 in 300+).
