The two main and important factors that pulled the US into the Great War was the sinking of the Luisitania and the Zimmerman Telegram. The Luisitania was a British passenger liner transporting thousands of British civilians from the US to Great Britain. It also had a couple hundred US civilians as well. During 1915, Germany was undergoing unrestricted submarine warfare, which entailed that German submarines were to fire on sight, without warning, on allied ships, regardless of it's purpose, wether that be civilian transport, cargo shipping, or warship. The Luisitania was sunk on May 7th, 1915, which raised public outcry from the then-nuetral US. Allegedly, the Luisitaniawas carrying shipments of war material to Britan, which was in violation of American neutrality and within German rights to sink, but was never proved nor a factor in the US decision to go to war two years later. Secondly the Zimmerman Telegram was a message sent from Germany to Mexico promising the land conquered from them in the Mexican-American War or the 1840's if they invaded the US. This was in attempt to delay American involvement in the war and give the Germans time to beat the French and the British on the Western Front. The message was intercepted by the British and promptly handed over to the Americans. While the US did not go to war the next day, the politics that followed were of lesser importance. The public outcry was to go to war, and Woodrow Wilson did so.
