To my understanding the South did not have the right to secede from the Union. According to Section 10 of the US Constitution, No State shall enter into any Treaty, Alliance, or Confederation. To the North there was no question that the South's secession was due to them losing the national election to the Republican Party who was well known to be an anti-slavery Party. Abraham Lincoln promised he would only stop the expansion of slavery which he proved to be true throughout the war, except when he passed the Emancipation Proclamation.
