I would suspect a bad starter solenoid that you shorted across. I would use a test light or multi meter to probe the wire leads that go to the starter solenoid and if they test good, replace the starter/ solenoid as an assembly. more then likely it is you Vehicle anti Theft System..... it says a signal to start your starter and your fuel injectors...... that's why it dies right after

The starter relay is integrated into the starter. Have you checked the neutral lockout switch? If the neutral lockout switch is faulty or adjusted wrong the starter will never engage. It could also be that the starter wires are cross-connected. Using a volt meter, make sure you are getting voltage to the starter bendix when you attempt to start the engine. If not, start backtracking to the keyswitch to see where you DO have voltage.

I have run boats with 3-71s. You need a starter to start that engine. The starter could be an electric starter or an air starter, or even a hydraulic starter.
