It seems the switch sits as an integrated part oft the door locking system, and that the "physical" switch is actually the door latch itself.
i haven't actually looked at a passat but would imagine if there is no obvious button type switch under the bonnet the switch or sensor is built into the latch, maybe it is after getting unplugged.hope this helps

A normally closed switch is a switch that is normally closed. When you operate it, it opens.
The flasher is built into the emergency hazard switch. Just pop out the bottom pieces and its then easier to get your finger in and pop out the flasher.
It is screwed into the bottom passenger side of the radiator. Be careful. When you unscrew the switch to replace it, coolant will pour out. If you are quick you will only lose about a quart.
what does closed switch mean
The flasher unit is incorporated as part of the hazard flasher switch. Just prise the switch out gently, then release the two red tabs at the rear top and bottom of the switch. Once they are released you can remove the plug and wires.

'the rotary switch in the drivers door has 3 positions "R centre and L" if it is in the centre then his only turns on the heated mirror facility twist it to r and you can then use the switch as a joystick to move the mirror up down in out. move the switch to L to move the nearside mirror'
it is actually quite simple. pop out the switch, unplug the wires that plug into the bottom side of the switch and then plug the wires into the new one and pop the switch right back in.
Drivers side of the radiator, down towards the bottom. It will have a three wire plug on the end.
