NEW ANSWER:
In 1732, James Oglethorpe and several friends received a charter from King George II, to organize a colony south of the Carolinas. The colony was named Georgia in honor of the king.
The plan was to make the colony a haven for the debtors and paupers who filled the English jails in the 18th century. But, from Oglethorpe's point of view, Georgia was a failure.
He advertised far and wide among the English poor, but few ever became colonists. Instead, Georgia, like most of the other southern colonies - was settled by land-hungry men and women, who quickly tried Oglethorpe's well meaning supervision.
The colony staggered for 20 years. However, under royal control by the king, beginning in 1752, the colony changed rapidly. Slaves were imported, and cotton and rice plantations were established. And Georgia prospered.
