the castradi

Castrati were male singers who were castrated before their voice changed, so as to preserve an especially beautiful voice. They sang in the same register as a mezzo-soprano. The practice was discontinued in the nineteenth century. The highest male voice now is a countertenor, a man with an especially powerful falsetto, in effect a male mezzo-soprano.
