Deccan Plateau
The lava covered plateau that extends across most of southern India is the Deccan. It rises 100 meters high in the north.
The Ontong Java Plateau, which is located in the Pacific Ocean and was formed by a very large-scale igneous event known as a large igneous province around 125 - 120 million years ago, is the largest lava plateau in the world.
A lava plateau is a flat, wide surface (plateau) that is formed when lava comes out of the ground and spreads out very quickly. The lava layers form a lava plateau. With each eruption and flow of lava, the plateau grows in size.
The lava-covered plateau extending across most of the southern portion of India is known as the deccan. The area known as "the land of the five rivers" is the punjab.

First, lava flows out of several long cracks in an area. The thin, runny lava travels far before cooling and solidifying. Again and again, floods of lava flow on top of earlier floods. After millions of years, these layers can form high plateaus.
