Energy is not transferred to the load via the free electrons drifting through the wire. The 'conveyor belt' theory of electrons delivering energy and returning to the supply, depleted of that energy, is completely incorrect. This is because (a) charges (electrons) drift far too slowly (millimetres per hour) and (b) in the case of a.c., they simply vibrate back and forth. Energy is delivered external to the conductors probably via what is known as the 'Poynting's Field', a combination of the electrical field and the magnetic field.
