27 1/2 days to occur and 29 1/2 days to see. is this true? and how does that work? No, that's not quite it. You see the phases as they occur, and that process takes 29+ days. It is the sidereal period of the moon, the true 360 degree orbit around earth, that takes 27+ days. This is very counter-intuitive and you need to understand the difference between synodic and sidereal cycles to understand the difference. Once you understand this difference it will be very clear.

The full lunar "day" from sunrise to the subsequent sunrise is approximately 28 Earth days. This is the period of one moon orbit of the Earth. Half is "day" (light) and half "night" (darkness) about 14 Earth days for each.Interestingly the bottoms of some craters at the north nd south poles of moon never see any light as the lunar sky does not reflect or diffuse lights into the shadowed bottoms.

-- The period of the moon's orbital revolution around the earth is 27.32 days.

-- The period of a complete cycle of the moon's 'phases' is 29.53 days.

-- The period of the moon's revolution around the sun is 365.23 days on the average.

We see the Moon go through phases as the angles between the Moon, the Sun and Earth change. The Moon takes just over 27 days to complete a single orbit around Earth, and over this time we will see it go through a full phase cycle.

That depends on what you're calling the "lunar cycle".

If you mean the length of time it takes the moon to revolve once around the Earth,

and return to its same position in the sky again with the same stars around it, that

would be 27.32 days.

If you mean the length of time it takes the moon to display a full set of "phases",

like from one Full Moon to the next Full Moon, that would be 29.53 days.

It takes 8 days from New Moon to Full Moon, so in between you need a middle thing and a middle thing between the middle thing and Full .oon and between the middle thing and New Moon. So there are 4 phases. 8 days between Full and New, that would mean it takes 2 days for the moon to change from one phase to another.
