The Beatles were a popular band in the 1950's! WRONG! The members of the Beatles were children in 1950. They did not perform together until the early 1960s, as any pop-music history book will tell you. Music in 1950 was in transition from jazz and swing to other forms. A lot of popular music was performed by vocalists such as Peggy Lee, Frankie Laine, Teresa Brewer, Bing Crosby, Nat King Cole, and others. There were also many small jazz groups, as well as larger orchestras primarily playing be-bob jazz. A few of the big bands from the mid-1940s were still performing as well, including Stan Kenton, Woody Herman, Jimmy Dorsey and Tex Beneke's orchestras.
Music and film were still inextricably bound in the popular form of the musical and of the top ten grossing films of 1950, two were musicals. Disney's Cinderella was, of course, an animated musical and was the top grossing film of that year. The third top grossing film was Annie Get Your Gun which was Hollywood's rendition of the stage play by the same name. Then number two spot went to King Solomon's Mines, the fourth going to Cheaper by the Dozen and number five was Born Yesterday. The sixth highest grossing film of 1950 was Father of the Bride, the seventh being Broken Arrow the eighth was At War With the Enemy. Number nine on the top grossing films was also the Best Picture of the Year for the Oscars and was All About Eve and number ten was The Flame and the Arrow.
Other films of note for that year were Sunset Blvd. which has in many ways out lived all the others with the exception of Cinderella. Cyrano de Bergerac brought Jose Ferrer an Oscar as Sunset Blvd did for Gloria Swanson. The Asphalt Jungle was released in that year as was Jimmy Stewart and his beloved Harvey. Akira Kurosawa's Rashomon and the Sands of Iwo Jima both were released in this year.
Of the pop charts, the top ten singles of that year were; Fat's Dominoes "The Fat Man" followed by "Please Send Me Someone to Love" by Percy Mayfiield and number three was, "Teardrops From My Eye's" by Ruth Brown. Nat King Cole came in at number four with "Mona Lisa" and Patti Page's "Tennessee Waltz" took the number five spot. The beloved Hank Williams took the number six spot with "Long Gone Lonesome Blues" and someone by the name of Professor Longhair took number seven with "Mardis Gras In New Orleans". "I'm Moving On" by Hank Snow was number eight and number nine was taken by the immortal Muddy Waters with "Rollin' Stone". Rounding out the top ten with number ten was "Double Crossing Blues" by Johnny Otis performed by Little Esther and the Robbins.
