The need for social approval is important?

No. Social approval is not vital in carrying out life. If someone doesn't approve of you, then their approval isn't important enough to consider. A great author once said, "God made life to impress him, not other people."

-- And in American culture that is the socially approved way of answering the question, as if we were self-confirming individuals, not caring at all for each other's opinions. But in reality we are highly in need of social approval. One psychologist wrote, "the need for social approval is often more important than the pursuit of happiness." The reality for many is that the pursuit of happiness is impossible without at least some social approval.
