The prime meridian runs through Greenwich, England. In the late 19th Century,

Constabulary Ordinances and local Statutes were enacted which stipulated that

it be allowed to do that only between the hours of 3:00 AM to 4:15 AM local time,

in order to avoid disturbing the local residents. Serious fines and other deterrent

penalties were provided for breach of those laws. As the result, tourists almost

never see the Meridian running, and the majority may be unaware that it does so.

Is cape town near 0 degree longitude?

No; zero longitude (the Prime Meridian) runs through Greenwich, England. ===================================== The center of Capetown is about 18.45 East longitude. That's about 1,052 miles east of the closest point on the Prime Meridian. The Prime Meridian is defined as the meridian that passes through Greenwich, but one should never make the mistake of thinking that no place far from Greenwich can be near the Prime Meridian. The Prime Meridian (and all other meridians) joins the poles, and it's over 12,000 miles long. One of the points on it is the south pole, and that's about 9,780 miles from Greenwich. The center of Accra, Ghana, in west Africa, is only about 15 miles from the Prime Meridian, significantly closer to it than Bournemouth, Oxford, Nottingham, Oxford, or Manchester is in England. And Barrow, Alaska is about 1,290 miles from the Prime Meridian ... closer than Moscow, Athens, or Cairo is.
