Feudalism
Traditionally, it was said that the Normans imposed the feudal system on England. This is based on the assumption that there was no feudal system already in operation in England - a view that some doubt. It is safer to say that the Normans made the feudal system more thorough. Matters are complicated by the fact that there is no agreed definition of feudalism.
The Normans introduced the Feudal system to England after the defeat of the Saxons in 1066. In this system, feudal lords, who were Norman, controlled regions of England and Wales, and later Scotland. The Norman lords constructed large castles and owned great estates farmed by poor farmers called serfs. The serfs did not own their land and had to give a portion of their crops and livestock to their lord every year. In return, if there was trouble, the serfs could seek shelter within the grounds of the lord's castle. Freemen who served the lord were called yeomen, and held many different kinds of positions. This system of land ownership and suppression of the poor was cruel, oppressive, and tyrannical, but it did give the Normans a great deal of power over the Saxons.
