The significance of Christmas?
The significance of Christmas started as a Christian Holiday celebrating the birth of Jesus but is now much more than that. Christmas is a time for happiness, family, presents, giving, kindness and tradition. :)

There are many different opinions regarding the significance of red and green as the traditional Christmas colors. One possibility is that the colors represent the Christmas wreath with its beautiful greenery augmented by red berries. Another possibility is that the color green represents life and the promise of eventual spring while red represents a sense of warmth.

Not everybody celebrates or acknowledges Christmas as a day of significance, and many are understandably offended when it is assumed they do care about it (for example, Islam does not celebrate Christmas, and Muslims are justifiably annoyed when someone else wants them to acknowledge another religion's holy days).

It was chosen by the Christian Church, in the 4th century AD that the Feast of Christmas would be on December 25th, since it was 12 days before the Feast of Epiphany; the number 12 is considered to be of biblical significance. (12 tribes of israel, 12 disciples of Christ, etc) This is the 12 days of Christmas
Because they are there. There's no deep spiritual or other significance to the eating of pies at Christmas. It's a holiday, a time for family gatherings, and when people get together they often like to eat. And when they, they often like dessert. And often that dessert is a pie (or cobbler, which is kind of the lazy cook's version of pie).
Nothing that I know of, and I've been a member of the Church for 23 years. Mormons celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ on Christmas, which is December 25th. Joseph Smith's birthday is December 23rd, but it is not celebrated. This year (2010) the Mormon Tabernacle Choir Christmas Concert is held on December 19th, but there is no significance to the date. The Choir holds a Christmas concert every year in December.

Christmas is presently a secular holiday (Santa, present, egg nog and so on) and a Christian religious festival.. It is difficult to tell which group of celebrating people is which. This is made even more difficult by concurrent festivals by Jews, Druids and followers of the Viking gods. Some even celebrate Newton's birthday on Decemberr 25.Everybody is a having a good time.
