The tail lights on my 1988 Chevy Nova work fine when I press the brake pedal but when I turn on the switch for lights only the headlights seem to work and not the tail lights why don't they work?

The tail light bulbs are on a different circuit than the signal light/stop light bulbs. Check for a burnt fuse or a loose wire.

Check the fuse for the headlights. It is probably open.

The brake lights and the tail lights are separate circuits. Check the brake light fuse, then check the brake light bulbs, then check the brake light switch.

its just a fuse, look for a fuse panel there are two. one under the dash and the other under the hood.
