In 1775 there were 32 colonies under British rule in North America. This included Canada, the Florida's, and the islands of the Caribbean. The white colonist population numbered 1,600,000 in 1760, 2,500,000 in 1775 and it doubled every 23 years. Colonial America was a melting pot of people. In 1775 6% of the population were German, 7% Scot/Irish, 5% Welsh, Dutch, Swedes, and Jews. There were 50,000 "jayle" birds and indentured servants. The largest group were yeoman farmers because 90% of the country made a living farming. The smallest group of people were the lawyers, officials, clergy, planters, and aristocrats. By 1790-1840 huge changes took place within the United States. The population grew to 17 million and by 1790 the land size was larger than England, France, and Spain. Yet, in 1840 6 out of 10 still made their living from farming compared to 9 out 10 in 1790. Cities grew by 1840 and 11% of the population were living in cities while 10% were working in factories compared to 5% living in cities in 1790. The change to factories had begun and by 1860 only 5 out of 10 Americans worked on farms.
