The USA prevented elections in Vietnam in 1956 because they believed the Vietnamese people would vote in a Communist government, under Ho Chi Minh.

The 1956 elections were intended to unify Vietnam (which was split between the Communist north, under Ho Chi Minh, and the American-backed, Capitalist south, under Ngo Dinh Diem) under one government.

The American government feared that Ho Chi Minh, a Communist, would win the election and would make the whole of Vietnam Communist. The American government was keen to prevent this occurring, as they pursued a policy of containing Communism abroad (known as the Truman Doctrine). They also feared that if all of Vietnam became Communist then neighbouring countries would do the same - Laos, Cambodia, Burma etc. - known as the Domino Theory.

Why are swing states important to election?

Swing states are important in elections because they are not reliably Democratic or Republican, meaning they can "swing" either way. Candidates target these states because winning them can significantly impact the outcome of the election. Swing states have a higher influence on determining the election's result, as they can ultimately tip the scale in favor of a particular candidate.

Do blue states count in the general election?

Of course they do. Population wise not really, because population doesn't decide the election. Only the electoral collage does. The blue states represent Decorates and the red states represent Republicans.
