In "Touching Spirit Bear," the author, Ben Mikaelsen, explores themes of healing, forgiveness, and personal growth. The story follows the journey of a troubled teenager, Cole, who learns to take responsibility for his actions and confront his inner demons through a transformative experience in the wilderness. Ultimately, the message is one of redemption and the power of self-discovery in overcoming adversity.
Well.....its basically about a boy named Cole who has done wrong all his life e.g: stealing, and fighting....until he is put blame on for one of his wrong deeds by Peter Driscal. He corners him and beats him senseless....and then has the option of going to jail or circle justice. Everybody puts there own ideas and concerns in and it then comes to a conclusion of where he will be sent to a desert, remote Alaskan island alone to help heal himself. There he burns the shelter made for him and all the supplies except the at.oow and a hunting knife. He then spots the spirit bear and tries to kill it because it is not afraid of Cole. And it does not fear him. But, the bear then mauls him and nearly kills him .... Cole is then very harshly beaten up and does not have the strength to move much. Many of his bones were broken including his arm bone and pelvis..etc. He decides he wants to stay alive and his emotions change from there. He does whatever he can to survive for some days which he is staying on that island. He eats insects, worms, a mouse, blades of grass and some of his own barf/vomit. He also had some dripplets of water, which barely made it through his chapped mouth, from the days it had rained. He was covered in blood and his clothes were ripped. While he was lying on the ground....he saw the spirit bear again. Cole thought it would try to beat him again..but instead just stood beside him. Cole reached out and gently touched the spirit bear.
The theme is to be honest, if you don't tell the truth, people won't believe you. Just like when nobody believed Cole when he said he saw the spirit bear.
