Problem sounds like your hydraulic lifters. Might be a bad one or it can be dirty or even scorched.

NO. A knocking noise in the engine is a problem in the engine.
If its gasoline it would be a problem in your head causing the piston to slap against the cylinder walls. If its a diesel engine then the knocking is caused by the .001 to .002 second delay between the fuel injector closing and the compression/combustion of the fuel
Detonation involves a supersonic exothermic. Knocking in a engine is spark-ignition internal combustion.
Cant you just ask the people at the car place?
if it sounds like the knocking is coming from the bottom of the engine i would bet it was the rods or rod bearings may be worn. if the knocking is on the top ,then i would have the lifters and or the rocker arms checked.
Noise coming from engine in Oldsmobile Cutlass could be as a result of an oil leak in the rear of your engine. This makes the gears to wear off leading to severe knocking noise.
If you have knocking from the engine and smoke from the exhaust then you have far more problems than the car just not starting. Sick professional help immediately.
knocking noise
If its a legitimate knocking then you would want to go with head gasket if its a tapping you would be looking at a valve
ok where is the knocking coming from, brakes, engine ? only happens during acceleration ? if it is truly an engine knock, check oil immediately, but maybe to late, again need more info.
Internal knocking inside the engine is almost always a sign of worn bearings. Crankshsft, or rod bearing would be my guess. The fix, if it is internal, is overhaul. Before opening it up, make sure the knocking is indeed coming from inside the engine.
Having a bad rod bearing could cause a truck to make a loud knocking noise and shake when driving at high speeds. The engine having a coolant leak or an engine timing problem could also cause the knocking noise.
