They can be weathered:

  1. mechanically/physically:- such as freeze-thaw (where the rock has a joint or crack in which water is filled (by rain or other forms of precipitation) is frozen due to cold climate making the water turn to ice, therefore expanding causing the rock to expand, and over time this causes the rock to crumple into scree) and onion peel (where the outer layers of the rock flake of due to the sudden difference of temperatures causes the expanding and contracting the form cracks)
  2. chemical weathering:- when acid rain (H20 + CO2) weathers rocks such as limestone forming joints and cracks
  3. Biological weathering:- weathering due to natural causes such as rabbits and tree roots in which speeds up physical weathering, due to the fact that rabbits causes rocks to crumble when making burrows and tree rocks increases the width of the joints by roots growing through and around.

Describe at least three processes that mechanically weather rock?

(1) frost wedging--the expansion of freezing water pries rock apart; (2) pressure release--the reduction of pressure on a brittle rock mass, which can cause it to crack as it expands; (3) plant growth--as roots grow in cracks, the rock mass breaks up.

How does the composition of magma affect the temperature at which it solidifies?

Magma consists of molten rocks and metals. The composition can vary based on presence of water, metals with different melting points, and such.

Three ways in which waves erode rock?

1. They force water into cracks in the rock. That helps to break it up. It's called hydraulic action. 2. They dissolve soluble material from the rock. This is called solution. 3. They fling sand and pebbles against the rock. These wear it away like sandpaper. This is called abrasion.

8 A rock suspended by a scale weighs 5 N out of water and 3 N when submerged in water What is the buoyant force on the rock?

The buoyant force accounts for the missing 2 N when the rock is in water. The 2 N is the weight of the volume of water equal to the volume of the rock ... the water that the rock 'displaces' (pushes aside) when it enters the water.

What is ocean stacks?

An ocean stack is a piece of the mainland that extends out into the coast and is surrounded on 3 sides by water. It is pounded by the ocean waves which weather away the weaker pieces of sediment and rock forming it into a jagged piece of rock that juts up from the ocean. Eventually the ocean currents will cause the remaining rock and sediment away.
